A failed strap during transit can cost a life. A failed strap during a DOT inspection costs your CSA score, your wallet, and sometimes your job. The frustrating part is that most strap failures happen because of damage that was already visible before the load left the yard — damage a 30-second inspection would have caught. Here's how to do it right, every time.
What DOT Inspectors Look For
Under 49 CFR Part 393.104, a tie-down is considered out of service if it has any of the following:
- Cuts, holes, or tears in the webbing
- Abrasion that has worn through more than one-third of the webbing's width
- Knots tied in the webbing (knots reduce strap strength by 40–60%)
- Chemical burns, heat damage, or discoloration from exposure
- Broken or cut stitching at any sewn junction
- Missing or damaged hooks, or hooks that have been bent or straightened
- A ratchet mechanism that won't lock, click, or hold under tension
- A missing or illegible Working Load Limit (WLL) label
Any single one of these conditions takes the strap out of service immediately. Inspectors don't grade on a curve.
The 5-Point Strap Inspection Checklist
Run through this on every strap before the load leaves the yard. Total time: 30 seconds.
1. Webbing — Full Length Check
Lay the strap out or run your hand along the full length while it's still coiled. You're feeling for cuts, burns, rough texture, stiffness, or any soft spots where fibers have broken internally. Pay extra attention to the areas near the hooks where straps take the most tension stress.
2. Stitching — All Sewn Joints
Every strap has stitched end loops or sewn-in hardware attachments. Check every single one. If any thread is broken, frayed, or missing, the rated strength at that junction is gone. There's no such thing as a "partially intact" stitched joint — if it's compromised, the strap is done.
3. Hooks and Hardware
Look at every hook: flat hook, J-hook, wire hook, whatever you're running. You're looking for:
- Cracks or fractures in the metal
- Bending or deformation at the throat of the hook
- Missing safety keepers or keepers that won't stay closed
- Any hook that's been bent open and re-bent closed — that hook is done, full stop
A hook that looks "mostly okay" is not okay. Metal fatigue doesn't announce itself until the hook opens under load.
4. Ratchet Mechanism
Cycle the ratchet handle. It should click cleanly through each position and lock without slipping. Red flags:
- Frozen or stiff pawl that doesn't spring back
- Rust inside the ratchet body that's binding the axle
- A release lever that's bent or won't return to the locked position
- Any slipping under light hand pressure — if it slips in your hands, it will slip under load
5. WLL Tag/Label
The Working Load Limit label must be present and legible. No exceptions. A faded, torn, or missing label is a violation during inspection — the inspector has no way to verify the strap's rated capacity, which means it can't be counted toward your tie-down requirement for that load.
When to Retire a Strap
Use this as your decision rule:
- Any cut deeper than 1/8 inch in the webbing — retire it
- Any heat or chemical burn, regardless of visible size — retire it
- Any broken thread at a stitched junction — retire it
- Any hook that's been bent open (even if bent back into shape) — retire it
- Any strap that's been in a load that shifted violently or fell — inspect carefully, likely retire it
The rule of thumb that experienced drivers use: if you have to think about whether to keep it, retire it. A replacement ratchet strap costs $15–$30. A blown strap on the highway costs infinitely more.
How to Store Straps Properly
Most strap damage doesn't happen during the load — it happens in the trailer between runs. Storage matters.
- Coil loosely — don't force tight coils that kink the webbing. A loose figure-eight coil keeps tension off the fibers.
- Store dry — wet webbing stored in a closed environment grows mold and weakens fibers. Dry the straps before storing.
- Keep out of direct sunlight — UV breaks down polyester webbing. Straps left in open trailers in direct sun degrade faster than straps used daily in covered loads.
- Don't store under freight — straps crushed under a load for days absorb moisture from the trailer floor and get ground into abrasive surfaces.
- Pair your straps with corner protectors in transit to reduce edge wear on every load.
How Often to Replace
Even straps that pass every visual inspection have a service life. Webbing degrades from UV exposure, thermal cycling, and micro-abrasion even when the strap looks fine.
- Daily flatbed use: Replace every 12–18 months. At this frequency, straps are accumulating hundreds of loading cycles and significant UV exposure.
- Occasional use: Inspect monthly, replace at 3–5 years regardless of visible condition. UV and moisture degrade straps in storage — age alone is a retirement reason.
- After any incident: Any strap involved in a load shift, rollover, or crash gets retired immediately, regardless of appearance.
